Planning software and BIM applications for formwork and scaffolding technology

For many years now, the PERI portfolio has included software for the planning of application solutions with PERI systems. PERI CAD planning software is used worldwide by both PERI engineers as well as contractors, and is being continuously further developed and refined. In addition, the formwork and scaffolding provider has been intensively involved in the current trend of Building Information Modeling (BIM).

PERI CAD is an important tool in the day-to-day activities of professional work preparation and all PERI systems with their respective rules can be quickly and professionally planned with the software. System components of the PERI formwork systems, TRIO and SKYDECK, were recently upgraded via the Tekla Warehouse in Tekla Structures from Trimble. As a result, this ensures that users of this BIM software – worldwide – can quickly and easily plan the aforementioned PERI systems. They can use the PERI formwork system components in their planning and detect boundary conditions resulting from the formwork solution at a very early stage. Furthermore, a first simulation of the scheduled forming operations can be easily created.

For more complex formwork and scaffolding solutions, PERI CAD is also the right application in future as this specific software provides far more functionalities and automatisms, and includes all system components of the PERI portfolio.

The outlook: BIM as the future planning standard

Building Information Modelling is not a special type of software. Rather more, the trend serves to depict the entire life cycle of a structure – from planning and execution through to daily operations. The basis of BIM is a 3D building or construction model whereby all featured components must be specifically disclosed in its visual, technical and functional characteristics. Through the additional integration of the time and cost factors, the 3D model will be extended gradually to a 4D or 5D model.

The main advantage is that planning and execution variants can be simulated during an early stage of the project using the 3D building model. The superposition of different models highlights interface problems during the planning phase. This results in cost savings in the execution of the construction work.

Against this background, PERI has concerned itself for quite some time with the benefits and possibilities of BIM during the planning of formwork and scaffolding solutions. Especially as it is standard practice for PERI to combine three-dimensional planning models with time components via the operational and cycle planning. The goal of all curent software developments is the complete integration of formwork and scaffolding solutions in future BIM simulations. Therefore, more and more process data is being integrated into corresponding database systems. The internal Centrio PDM project data management thus allows employes worldwide to work together on projects because all participants can access same continually updated database. Another step towards increasing cross-company communication is the use of mobile devices during the planning and execution phases which, among other things, facilitate the access and processing of checklists.

The pilot project: BIM in use for the Filstal Bridge

As part of a phased plan, the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) has designated four pilot projects for the introduction of BIM in national infrastucture construction activities. With these projects, the application of BIM is being tested and scientifically evaluated. One of the pilot projects is the Filstal railway bridge. The 485 m long structure features two single-track bridges and this German Federal railway project is part of the new high-speed rail route between Stuttgart – Wendlingen – Ulm. With a maximum height of 85 m, it will be the third highest bridge construction in Germany.The shell structure is scheduled for completion in 2018.

Consortium members, Max Bögl / Porr, have appointed PERI as their formwork partner and all parties will be able to gather valuable experience with the implementation of BIM applications in the coming months. For PERI, this is an important aspect namely now having the opportunity of applying the wide range of ideas and approaches in the field and thus ensuring a beneficial use of the trend
